Data Gravity on Cloud

6 Feb

Dave McCrory quotes

“Consider Data as if it were a Planet or other object with sufficient mass. As Data accumulates (builds mass) there is a greater likelihood that additional Services and Applications will be attracted to this data. This is the same effect Gravity has on objects around a planet. As the mass or density increases, so does the strength of gravitational pull. As things get closer to the mass, they accelerate toward the mass at an increasingly faster velocity”

This paragraph has got lot of sense and neatly summarizes the importance of data for any business , he further adds on its not the volume of data but the importance of data that should be considered for the building of mass(another great line)

The epitome of Intellectuality:Steve Jobs

24 Jan

There are great individual who give vision and direction to the present generation but there are few genius who can give vision to the next generation and among them is Steve Jobs

Here is the collection of some of his legendary statement

1.  I was worth about over a million dollars when I was 23 and over 10 million dollars when I was 24, and over a hundred million dollars when I was 25 and it wasn’t that important because I never did it for the money.

2.  I would trade all of my technology for an afternoon with Socrates.

3.  My job is to not be easy on people. My job is to make them better. My job is to pull things together from different parts of the company and clear the ways and get the resources for the key projects. And to take these great people we have and to push them and make them even better, coming up with more aggressive visions of how it could be.

4.  I mean, some people say, ‘Oh, God, if (Jobs) got run over by a bus, Apple would be in trouble.’ And, you know, I think it wouldn’t be a party, but there are really capable people at Apple. My job is to make the whole executive team good enough to be successors, so that’s what I try to do.

5.  The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.

6. We don’t get a chance to do that many things, and every one should be really excellent. Because this is our life. Life is brief, and then you die, you know? And we’ve all chosen to do this with our lives. So it better be damn good. It better be worth it.

7. It’s really hard to design products by focus groups. A lot of times, people don’t know what they want until you show it to them.

8. In most people’s vocabularies, design means veneer. It’s interior decorating. It’s the fabric of the curtains of the sofa. But to me, nothing could be further from the meaning of design. Design is the fundamental soul of a human-made creation that ends up expressing itself in successive outer layers of the product or service.

9. …Almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure — these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

10. You can’t just ask customers what they want and then try to give that to them. By the time you get it built, they’ll want something new.

11. I didn’t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

Great Team and Philosophy behind it

16 Oct

How many times have we heard of this word Team and another hypothetical word Team Spirit(its indeed a hypothesis if you can’t feel or understand it),may be few hundreds, may be few thousand, may be few million or may be more. Now whats so great about it?Well if you try analyzing journey of your life how many times did you find yourself in a group, which may happen being part of college football or basketball team, being a part of dance group, may be sharing a room in a hostel, moving forward to the most important point working in a organization. You will find most of the time you are working in a team or group rather than working alone. So it becomes more obvious for us to understand the essence of a team and working together we can achieve better results than summing up our individual efforts. It also help us upgrading ourselves from our current level to next higher level(which I believe should be the motto of every individual). Here I want to put some points as to how make a great team in any organization
1)Make a team of individuals who are different(in what sense?)When I mean different,it means they all should complement each other with each having unique ways of doing thing, with unique imagination(whats the benefit?)The benefit of doing this will if all of them are same then to tackle any problem or issues they will use the same way which all of us understand is not going to help in long run because in life you will not always find problems which are same or which you have tackled before they will always be different for that you will need out of box solution(now is it making sense?)
2)Make every individual in team as leaders with no followers(how absurd is that…..not its not…..rather very simple)Give every individual freedom in doing his/her work and make him/her own the project or module because by ownership it attaches responsibility with which comes more dedication and focus and the result nonetheless to say will be in simple term great!!!!
3)In the above line when I said freedom it denoted freedom to loose(oh i have gone crazy…..is it?)Now how many times we have stopped ourselves from doing something because we had a fear that we will loose or the result might be negative.I can bet many a times. Now why is that because we have made a comfort zone around ourselves and are happy within it,whenever we are asked to move into some unexplored territory away from our zone of comfort, fear creeps in why because of failure, rejection or whatever (words you want to put to signify negativity)Now if I remove that fear of loosing by giving you freedom to do things irrelevant of outcome, what will be result(just stretch your brain cells….you will get the answer)
4)Make a habit of congratulating excellent failures and removing the excitement of mediocre success within the team(howzzzat…)Well I believe in the philosophy that we don’t miss our goal because its too high but achieve it because its too low.So mediocre success are result of effort which was put to reach a goal which was not that far away.If a ordinary individual has put in extraordinary efforts to achieve some impossible goals(impossible in itself means I’m possible)then even if he fails his failure needs celebration because next time he is bound to succeed with results beyond imagination
5)In order to lead this team you need ……what good manager(naaaaah…..)able leaders who should lead from the front, who just doesn’t sit in the laurels that he has got team within him and his whole and soul purpose is to manage this people.A leader is one who sees a ray of light in end of the dark tunnel when all his team member have given to the darkness, who have the courage to stay calm and focused even if his team is perplexed. One who gives all the credit bestowed for success to his members and all the brickbats on himself in case of failures(high expectation from the manager……again i repeat leaders….they are not interchangeable)
6)Don’t make habit of doing a team meeting always inside a closed board room(it sucks…..)instead go for coffee or drink parties discuss your theory or creative ideas over there,as personally think your mind works the best when its free that doesn’t mean it cannot be free in a board room but the traditional way of those meetings are not very effective(according to me.)
7)Lastly never allow any individual to skip his meal or the evening coffee because he is too busy(not doing something which has urgency),because never try to work when your energy are low, always keep in mind that creativity is driven by stomach(who said so…..try doing something with empty stomach…..you can gauge your focus and imagination) so never starve yourself in the name of being busy instead try feeding yourself with the best food which you love then see the difference

Hmmm the monitor looks hazy ….why ? beacuse I am 7 pegs old and think am drunk and on 7th heaven so I will keep this article to this 7 points………..till then cheers

Women would make good Manager???

5 Oct

Being in corporate sector for quite some time and a eye to look around whats happening. One thing I find very mind-boggling is why we have so less women managers.Even if you look around why not many start up business have women as their head, why not many companies have CEO as women though the male:female ratio is as good or closer to 1:1

Well tough question and the discussion will be more tougher to be result-oriented but here I want to list down few points why women can make good managers or entrepreneurs

Disclaimer:These points have been inspired from Tom Peters and I agree to all of them

Meeting—Debate vs Discussion

5 Sep

Debate vs discussion

I have been in this fancy world called corporate sector(it’s still a fancy for me) for quite a while now and had been attending countless number of meetings in the name of discussion.
When I tried to analyze what did those x number people investing y number of hours(all together investing xy manhours)in the name of discussion achieve?

Results

Most of the time its just a meeting (where people meet who knows they cannot do anything alone and together decides nothing can be done…..ahhh 100% vote and democracy prevails) ,

Sometimes when every individual has equal rights to speak (most of the time its the manager or so called leaders have it implicitly) and if each one is vocal enough to speak(again most of them prefer to be silent) it turns to be a debate and

Very rarely there is some genuine or healthy(as I want to put) discussion which happens, in order to set path which will help us achieve our goal and that’s the reason I believe we have something known as agenda(or to say Goal) for the discussion
Now as I moved further in this unexplored path where have I never been earlier one question popped up(like we have in our present web portals…arrg they suck ….but unexpectedly this didn’t) what’s the difference between a debate and a discussion

whats a debate and a discussion?

If I try to put it in my words(hopefully you will agree if not, we can debate or discuss as you want since my name is present beneath…..but read thy’s name only if you like the article)

Debate: To engage in argument by negating or opposing each others  points.
Discussion: The act of considering, understanding, examining, commenting each others points and then exploring for a reasonable or to say the best solution together.

As I put it, every individual are in some frame where he/she think and understands that he/she(hmmm she thinks and understands, big doubt….ohhh the sandals are coming….polite request one by one please) is correct. Sometimes we are in same frame and sometimes not,so when we are not in the same frame we try to prove each other wrong by negating each others points which one has put in order to support one’s views. Here is where debate starts….

But on contrary when we discuss, we try to move in each others  frame and try to understand everyone’s views, their reasoning and thinking and then together decide which frame is best suited for us(in order to achieve our goals or agenda) or is there any other frame from whose reference point all or the most frame looks similar or alike(got bored with these frames….still continue as you never know when i can tell some words of wisdom)

How to turn a debate into discussion

Every individual or person is unique and got a thinking process from which he/she derives his/her views .The traditional way of thinking as we more or less do (applicable to me too……naaaah just trying to be humble) is adversarial in nature where we define or draw line between whats right and wrong, then take our stand and try attacking the view of individuals on the other side with arguments which again most of the time accompanied with or sourced from ego( According to chanakya its  the start of individuals downfall when ego creeps in) .That’s where debate starts. It has some benefits as sometimes you can understand vulnerability in your stand and be more prepared before you take your stand next time. But have we ever thought of constructive thinking, where we try understand everyone’s point, with a question in individuals mind as what it should be? or can be? rather than what it is?Because most of the time we are not sure what it is and there fore we meet in order to find it out. That’s the way we can move from debate mode to discussion mode and find out a fruitful result

Be clear beforehand you are going for a debate or a discussion

Well I honestly think when ever we meet we should be clear about our goal and the abstract path we want to take and be prepared for discussion then only we would be able to achieve the desired result.
If you meet for a debate then just be sure where your stand is(abstractness wont work here) and if you are not clear about path then try be proactive in understanding every one’s views through constructive thinking and get involved in a discussion.

Well I believe if you follow this path every meeting will be a successful one and next time there will not be a dumbo who has to write something like this this is all I want to say(Thanks for bearing me)

SEMANTIC SEARCH(WEB 3.0)

28 Aug

SEMANTIC SEARCH(WEB 3.0)

Innovation has always been a part of evolution, which sometimes directly affect us sometimes not. Some important innovation that I can think of that directly affected me in last decade or so can be E-Mail,Cell phones,Search Engines(Google to be more specific).Google has now taken a integral part of our life(both professionally and personally)or to say has obtained ubiquity that we cannot even imagine life without it.The word googling has become such a cliche that Oxford should seriously think of adding it to the English dictionary. But in order to be master of googling you should know how to phrase your sentence so that you get the desired result(I still remember my lead in my first company gave me a hour of lecture as to how to phrase your text to get desired result).I am not making sense, hang on let me cite an example try searching the phrase “population of India” through your search engine then type “what is the size of India’s population” you will find that resultset fetched are not same(hmmmm) why? because it does not comprehend that both are one and same, as our human brain can do
Here emerges the semantic search which searches through the semantic web which might solve our problem.
Before we move on to the detail of the both lets see how the search engine works presently
How does Web Search Engines work

Web search engines are the superhero’s which search and retrieve information on the web. Most of them use crawler indexer architecture which use the crawler modules(Crawlers also referred to as spiders which are small programs that browse the web). They first retreive and store all the web pages that are present on internet, then indexes them depending upon the titles, heading,or meta tags.So when you hit the query in order to retrieve them ,they use this indexes and return the resultset which are relevant to your search.Again they have different algorithms for indexing and as well as giving importance to each object returned in the resultset(for e.g google uses page rank algorithm while others give importance to no. of times the phrase of search has been used in a particular web page……lets keep it short and not divulge into those details). In the end from common user’s perspective like me the usefulness of a search engine depends on the relevance or importance (to me)of the result set it gives back

What is semantic Web and Semantic Search

The Semantic Web will be new improved form of the current Web in which information will be given well-defined meaning, better enabling computers and people(us) to work in cooperation(i.e. by understanding each other). It is the idea of having data or objects on the Web defined and linked in a way that it can be used for more effective discovery, automation, integration, and reuse across various applications. In particular, the Semantic Web will contain resources corresponding not just to media objects (such as Web pages, images, audio clips, etc.) as the current Web does, but also to objects such as people, places, organizations and events. Further, the Semantic Web will contain not just a single kind of relation (the hyperlink) between resources, but many different kinds of relations between the different types of resources mentioned above.
Please have a look on to figure how Soubhagya Senapati object has a relation with profinia, with IDS,with Cricket. This denotes how all the objects are interrelated. This is what you can expect in future

The word semantic means(dictionary meaning) “of, pertaining to, or arising from the different meanings of words or other symbols”(i.e. trying to find out the meaning from a group of information)

The semantic search follows the concept of Research Searches. In many other cases, the user provides the search engine with a phrase which is intended to denote an object about which the user is trying to gather/research information.Actually there is no particular document which the user knows about that s/he is trying to get to. Rather, the user is trying to locate a number of documents which together will give him/her the information s/he is trying to find. This is the class of searches we are interested in.
Take for example you search for phrase “How to make a magazine” if there are objects(e.g web page) containing the phrases on the web then you are lucky else??? But semantic web will be storing the relation of the “How to make a magazine” with Editor,Articles,Web Designer,Content Designer,Writer,Printing House and your search will retrieve them . Just imagine the world with semantic web(simply amazing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

How does it impact the end user

Well how does it impact us, plain and simple as I have been telling all along it will make our life easier. It will take us from “todo” state to “done” state.Though true semantic Web is a bit far away(as the web is so hugh with so much of unstructured data) but companies have started using it.Google continues to use “smart indexing”, keywords/attributes, and behind the scenes semantics while Yahoo is using a more open approach, and is using content markup, open search and integrates vertical data feeds to enhance their results(being a Google fan I seldom use yahoo search so was unaware of it ).Ultimately, semantic search is about leveraging information to make the content on the semantic search results more structered .

Dr googler said:Its cool stuff but is cuil so cool?(check out for http://www.cuil.com which boast of webpage indexed more than google)

Billions of entrepreneurs

12 May

Indian youth

Late in night suffering from insomnia unable to find my beloved sleep and missing my best freind Dr Whisky thanks to three dry days for election, I thought of finding companionship in a book “Billions of entrepreneurs” by Tarun Khanna. After reading few pages I could not concentrate on the book because of one question continuously pinching me , as author was emphasizing a lot on entrepreneurship in India for Indian economy to grow but i could not visualize anything significant around me to see thats possible soon. The million dollar question was “Lack of Entrepreneurship in India” hmmmmm So I scuba-dive into the sea of my own question so that i can find pearl of logical answer to my question and this is what I found.

1. Indian Academics = Do what I say

Indian academics by many people around the world is seen as the best , because we have given some of the best Engineers, Doctors, Scientists, Mathematicians and Entrepreneurs. But if you look deeply into the history of these people who have achieved the height of success, credit goes to two things first is our middle class upbringing and other high aspiration to come out of the middle class. Now lets discuss how our academics kills the entrepreneur bug.

According to me entrepreneurship should start from ground level and best source of its origin should be our university but our curriculum and syllabus is outdated at least by couple of decades. There is no focus on latest trend and industry needs and rely on theory many of which are outdated and carry little significance in modern world, even theory of relativity became great theory after it was used to build Atomic-Bomb(though negatively). I tried to analyze the teaching methodology which most of the premier institutes provide. I found that they give very little scope for an individual to do things differently or innovatively or freedom to work which supports creativity. To support my opinion i will cite an example of my final year project during my engg. I presented my synopsis to my professor It was on implementation of supply chain management in Construction Field and the result was –he saw, he tore,he threw it in to the dustbin and told me to start researching on some other topic. You know why? Just because he was not interested at all in things which is not related to curriculum. I was quite hurt not because my month’s work went into drain or i felt disrespected, because he crushed my self-belief, my confidence that i could do something different and he did not even bother to give me reasoning which led my synopsis turn into a piece of bullshit. The only explaination he gave me try doing something in your core engineering field rather than wasting time on this useless management theories(useless?????).

According to me youth is the most priveleged part of a individual’s life where you have got

  • Bundle of energy
  • Strength not only physical most importantly mental
  • Self confidence on your abilities
  • Guts to take risk
  • Self belief to take the world in your stride
  • And most importantly time in your part to learn from your mistakes.

But I see many of those attributes of youngsters getting crushed in some part of indian universities daily which is the first reason towards lack of entrepreneurship or else how can you explain the trend people passing out IIT or other premier institues (BITS,NIT etc)joing stanford and starting up a company in silicon valley which they couldn’t try doing here . All of them though may not be succesful but still they do dare to live their dreams.

2. Social and Cultural burden = Be a Slave

Some where long time back i have heard Human is Social animal. I am not sure about western world but in India “Yes We Are”. In India we follow closed nuclear family system where most individual have lots of responsibilty be it towards parents, towards siblings or towards life partner. Unlike western world where as you grow up you strart becoming a individual entity far from all kind of above metioned responsibility. Though people might not agree to me but this do create a hindrance towards your road to entrepreneurship. Here if you are doing a govt. job and earning 5 or 6 figure salary is considered sucessful than a entrepreneur whose profit might be more than a person who does Naukri. I dont know how ? As the very word of naukri derived from naukar which means servant is better than the feeling of being entrepreneur or malik.

Let me write down of the problem which you will face if you leave your job and start ur own startup

  • You will face problems in marriage.
  • You will be socially cut.
  • You will not get loan from any bank.
  • You will not get credit card.
  • You will be seen as a person who is thrown out of job, means fired.

I beleive 200 years of british raj has affected and hit us much deeper than we can imagine or how else can one justify such demarcation between doing job and being entrepreneur. I thought that society is driven by individuals thinking together but its the society that drives individual. when I saw their views changing like a sine curve with every success and failure I received. All of us enjoy success but when I failed they made me feel like a loser and made me feel like I met a dead end without any u turn which was quite detrimental to my confidence of doing things which dont align to society.

In India we lack “Celebrating Failure.” We need to build a culture where entrepreneur or failed entrepreneur given more respect than people who are doing simple job. Parents and friends should feel proud that we are working to contribute to the society larger than any one else. Every one should understand that entrepreneurs don’t work for money they work because they want to bring change through what they believe in. Let the society understand that if we want to eliminate poverty and unemployment from India it can’t be done by politicians of this country but by Entrepreneurs of India.

3. Lack of role models = Which God to worship

We follow religion why? Because we want to build belief system around the religious belief’s of that religion. In a similar fashion we look for Role Models to give us certain belief in our life that following this person will definitely lead us to that great extent. I have some one to follow to get motivated to. I have a role model to which i can always look up and say if this person has done it means it’s possible to do it.Role models are someone whom you look forward to, who are insipirational, who’s act drive your path towards attaining your goal, but in India if you analyze last two decades you find a handfull of them in a country of over a billion (i am not taking into account the tatas, birlas or ambanis or mallyas they are second or third generation entrepreneurs for whom most of things are in place). To name a few of them Narayan murthy, Captain Gopinath, Sabeer bhatia…. (I am considering only entrepreneur who are indian by birth). Its fine if we dont have lary page and sergi Brin(Co-founder google) atleast we should have a dozen of mark zuckerberg(CEO facebook,is a billionare at a age of 23) in two decades.

4. Proper funding or VC = Please I am not a beggar

A VC to a startup is like a fertilizer for a growing plant because you may have a idea which may be brilliant but it needs to funded in order to transform your idea to an invincible reality. But unfortunately in India the Vc’s mindset are like those of the american ones in 1980’s who are quite circumspect and reserved and weigh too much each idea you go with . They always wants to be doubly sure about the future of your project in terms of profitabilty which is like an hindrance in funding a startup. In India VC’s sees founders as beggar who are dieing for money to survive. So what they do is firstly they will evaluate the startup who is already in a mode of becoming successful very soon and weigh its value so less that in a very less investment they can get larger share and even all the top position’s in the management.

Lets bring VC’s in India who can invest like they want to build this nation with there mentor ship and money.

5. Red-tapism and Lack of facilities from govt.

Needless to say how important are infrastructure in form of roads, airport, electricity, water supply, telecom services for growth of any industry and if they are indequate then they cause major hindrance for the companies. We still have long way to catch compared to developed countries. Moreover there is a lot of red-tapism that goes in govt offices, everyone will agree to it as almost all have faced it at some point or other in order to get what little facilities they provide which further pulls the individuals down. What does that mean for an entrepreneur?

  • It means if a work takes 2 days it will take 2months.
  • If he can start his business in 50K he needs 5Lakh.
  • If he can work with 3 people he needs 10People.
  • If his reach to customer base is 1million it will come down to 1Lakh.

Our government and government employees needs to understand that we are not working for us its for our country. We are not here to make money so that you can share a profit. We are here to create money which would shared among the people.

6. Indian Market and psychology of consumers

Indian customers the safest game player in the world. They hate to take risks, even if some one takes ,he is firstly seen as stupid who doesn’t knows whether the product is good or bad. So how does it effects the entrepreneurship?

  • It takes longer time for people to accept new product.
  • Large money to spend on advertising and brand building.
  • Longer time for break even to come.
  • Even longer time to know that this product will fail or succeed.

Longer time for all above means that your risk to success has gone down million times than if you started the same startup in any other country.
